Where we work.
War Child works in some of the world’s most challenging contexts - Afghanistan, Yemen, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda - to protect and empower children and families affected by war. Our programs focus on three pillars: education, ensuring children access safe, quality learning; justice, helping communities uphold rights and protect women and children; and opportunity, providing vocational training and economic supports to rebuild livelihoods. By working hand-in-hand with local partners, War Child creates lasting solutions that break the cycle of poverty and violence, and help children reclaim their childhoods and build brighter futures.
Afghanistan
War Child has worked in Afghanistan for more than 20 years—and we’re not leaving now. We provide education, psychosocial support, safe spaces for children and youth, livelihood and skills training, and health services, including maternal care, to help children and mothers thrive despite conflict. We also provide humanitarian relief for flood-affected communities and returning refugees, helping them meet urgent needs while supporting recovery and resilience for the future.
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Since January 2025, escalating violence in eastern DRC has displaced a record 7.3 million people and forced over 86,000 to flee the country. We provide primary education through interactive radio-based education program. By adapting the national curriculum to a series of radio dramas, children can learn safely near where they live with the guidance of specially trained teaching assistants. By providing entrepreneurship training and seed funding to youth, we are helping them start their own business and giving them hope for a bright future.
South Sudan
We deliver education and livelihood programs that empower children and families to rebuild their lives. We have provided seed funding and other resources for local farmers to thrive despite climate crises and are promoting equitable learning opportunities, skills training and and employment opportunities for girls and youth. We also strengthen local civil society by supporting community-based organizations with resources and capacity-building to expand their reach and sustainability and to co-implement education and skills training programs.
Sudan
Since 2005, War Child has supported conflict-affected communities in Sudan, with a primary focus on the Darfur Region. Operations were suspended in Sudan in 2023 due to the escalation of conflict. War Child is now working to reinitiate its operational presence in the country. The initial re-engagement will be based out of Port Sudan, with the objective of leveraging our institutional knowledge and historical presence in Sudan to resume programming. Future programming aims to address the current humanitarian crisis through integrated interventions in sectors may include Education in Emergencies, Protection, Food Security and Livelihoods, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.
Uganda
Uganda hosts over 1.7 million refugees, primarily from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, making it the largest refugee-hosting nation in Africa. This influx has strained resources for families, leading to challenges such as high rates of school dropouts, malnutrition, and protection concerns among children, especially girls and children with disabilities. We support young refugees and host communities with education, vocational training, and economic opportunities for a more stable future, while also working with community-based organizations to build their capacity and ensure locally led, sustainable solutions.
Yemen
Yemen faces ongoing conflict, humanitarian challenges, and regional tensions impacting aid efforts. Yemen's humanitarian needs are vast, with over 18 million people requiring assistance, including 4.5 million displaced and nearly half of all children under five suffering from malnutrition. War Child programming focuses on supporting vulnerable children through educational and psychosocial interventions. Efforts include rehabilitating schools and providing learning and play materials.
