Update: November 6, 2025:
War Child Canada is responding to ANOTHER devastating earthquake in Afghanistan, that struck Balkh and Samangan provinces in the north of the country on November 3, 2025.
This is the second major earthquake in the country, in just over two months.
The 6.3 magnitude quake caused widespread destruction, killing dozens, injuring nearly 1,000 people, and destroying more than 800 homes. At least 30,000 have been affected.
Our northern Afghanistan team, based in Balkh, joined a multi-agency assessment mission within 24 hours of the disaster to identify urgent needs and coordinate humanitarian efforts.
If we can secure enough funding, War Child aims to work with partner and local organizations to deliver:
- Emergency shelter and essential non-food items (NFIs) for displaced families.
- Psychosocial support for children and survivors coping with trauma.
- Protection services for women and vulnerable groups.
- Multi-purpose cash assistance to help families meet their most urgent needs.
As one of the few Canadian NGOs with a permanent operational footprint in Afghanistan, War Child has more than 300 staff throughout the country and is able to reach hard-hit communities quickly.

Information from September 5, 2025 about the Eastern Afghanistan earthquake:
War Child is responding to the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan. From the first days, our team has conducted assessments and reached hard-hit villages. We mobilized our Jalalabad staff and warehouse capacity, dispatching dignity kits through UNFPA partners in Kunar, with 2,000 more scheduled this week.
Building on our previous Nangarhar earthquake response, we are delivering urgent interventions:
- Protection services for women and children at heightened risk.
- Psychosocial support via mobile teams for families coping with trauma.
- Multi-purpose cash transfers to help households meet priority needs with dignity.
- Essential non-food items such as blankets and kitchen sets for families in temporary shelters.
With operations based in Nangarhar, we will soon expand relief into Kunar Province, where needs remain urgent.
War Child maintains a permanent office in Jalalabad, a mobile psychosocial team, and 322 staff nationwide. We are one of the few NGOs with a direct operation in Afghanistan. This enables rapid response, access to remote communities, and coordinated scaling with local authorities, partners, and donors.
